I was going through some old slides and found this image from a ski traverse of the Adamants Range in British Columbia. The terrain was absolutely incredible and it was common to have to ski through/around icefalls like this one. This is a scan of a 35mm slide and it reminds me how difficult it would be to repeat a trip like this using digital equipment. Batteries would always be cold and there was little sun to permit solar charging. You couldn't bring too many batteries because of weight limitations skiing with a big pack. Maybe there's one niche left for 35mm film?

Europe and its nightlights, seen from the ISS
Europe at night, captured by ESA astronaut André Kuipers onboard the ISS. In shot is the Soyuz TMA-03M module that carried André to the ISS in December 2011, and a Russian Progress freighter.
André is onboard the ISS as part of ESA's long duration mission, PromISSe. For further information on the mission, please visit: www.esa.int/SPECIALS/PromISSe/index.html

Tortoise beetle
The tortoise beetles are an artificial grouping of tribes within the leaf beetle subfamily Hispinae. In past classifications, they have been variously placed as a family ("Cassidae") or a subfamily (Cassidinae); when it was recognized that this group was not monophyletic, it was split and the resulting tribes were incorporated into the Hispinae. Some of the tribes that are considered "tortoise beetles" in the historic sense are the Cassidini, Dorynotini, Hemisphaerotini, Ischyrosonychini, and Mesomphaliini. Their common name arose from the superficial resemblance some species bear to tortoises, the elytra being analogised with the aforementioned reptile's.

Barn swallow
(From Wikipedia) The Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica) is the most widespread species of swallow in the world.] It is a distinctive passerine bird with blue upperparts, a long, deeply forked tail and curved, pointed wings. It is found in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. In Anglophone Europe it is just called the Swallow; in Northern Europe it is the only common species called a "swallow" rather than a "martin".

Big City lights - San Francisco, CA

With summer here and winter gone cityscape captures have been on my to do list. Although I've been here before, I've not been able to get to this location. This bridge is growing on me with every visit. I'm determined to photograph it from every angle. A BIG THANKS to Ian who offered to take a few of us to this location including James and Rich.
It is a little "risky" to say the least. If you are willing to walk along side black-widow spiders down a steep mountain, then you should try it. It was well worth the walk as the view was breathtaking. The tide was low which allowed access to this particular location. Hope you all have a great weekend.
