Floating on Blue
I'm back from my course now, which was originally supposed to carry on for 3 days next week, but was fast tracked to finish on Friday. Working late most evenings meant there were practically no photo opportunities there.
This is my first upload of a pic taken with the new Canon 400D (taken last weekend). At the moment using it on fully auto the pics I have been taking seem very dark and blueish and the colours not as bright as my Nikon. Maybe I just need to get more of a feel for it and make a few comparison shots. At the moment I am slightly regretting not going for a Nikon SLR though.
This is a full size crop from a 10 megapixel pic (I currently just have a standard 18-55mm lens, no telephoto)

Dragonfly ?
First efforts with my new 105mm macro lens.... I think this one is a dragonfly - the light is not ideal (it's just about to set), but overall I think I'll keep practicing.. Unfortunately the shadows were so long that I spooked him as I moved to take a side angle shot...
I think its a dragonfly this time :)

Bowed - DxO
Some blades of grass just have a larger burden to bear.
I retreated this photo using the DxO lighting tool on BigHugeLabs.com. Pretty cool tool but I think it can easily over-process photos and you wind up with wacky and excessive HDR-like stuff. DxO added noise to the image, so I passed it through Neat Image again. The full version of DxO has noise filtering and a bunch of other stuff as well. I haven't bought it yet because it isn't available for my camera.
Looks pretty cool larger and On Black if you have a monitor that can display 1024x632 res.

Leaf Life Redux
This barking tree frog inside a green canna plant continues to be a perennial favorite within the micro stock design community...and I've alway marvelled at where this image helped lead me over the last two years.
The backstory:
During the summer of 2005, I took this shot in our garden when I was attempting to capture the swirls in the canna leaves. I was really surprised to see the frog residing inside the plant and snapped several shots with my point and shoot camera - a Canon S500.
Thus, one of my most well known shots was based on pure luck.
This is a new crop of the file that I originally uploaded to Flickr almost two years ago. One of the designers who liked it asked me to crop it differently to bring the frog more to the forefront of the image, and this was my favorite of the cropped versions.
I like to call this frog the good luck charm within my portfolio.... because without the positive feedback of the Flickr community so many months ago on a version of this image, I doubt if I ever would have thought I could actually sell my photos...

SF Sea of Clouds
I could not resist sharing this photo even though I'm still very much away from Flickr :-)
Many photos look more impressive than real life scenes (that's what photography is supposed to do :-)). This scene, however, is more spiritual than my photo could have ever captured!!! So, please at least VIEW IT IN LARGE.
This came out of my new year's day hike, about 10:00 AM PST, at 920 ft elevation above sea level, from Battery 129 on Hawk Hill that was part of the historic military installations (now defunct) that guarded the entrance to the San Francisco Bay. The Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco's skyscrapers were floating in and out of these low-hanging marine clouds, which would appear as thick fog to the beings on the ground :-). Two helicopters flew by, and they were dwarfed by the pillars of the bridge. Just enormous human creations interacting with nature's Sea of Clouds!

This was a technically difficult shot because of the back lit conditions, high brightness, and lack of contrast. So some degree of image manipulation was done, mainly towards improving the quality of the image rather than changing how it looks. In fact, I'd claim this was what it looked!!! :-)
